James Bond and Palácio Estoril Hotel
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The sixth instalment of the James Bond saga was predominantly filmed in Portugal. The cast resided at the Palácio Estoril Hotel throughout 1968, and the hotel provided an exceptional backdrop for the movie. The film featured the Australian actor George Lazenby, who portrayed the second iteration of the James Bond character after Sean Connery, alongside the English actress Diana Rigg.
The exterior of the hotel, the lobby, the pool, and the scenic views from the rooms all played integral roles in many scenes of the 1969 film release. During that period, the pool had been recently constructed. Several other locations in Portugal, such as Guincho Beach, Lisbon, and the Arrábida Mountain, were carefully chosen to serve as settings for various scenes in the film.
The movie prominently showcases the hotel’s entrance, encompassing its exterior facade and the lobby. These areas have remained essentially unchanged, while the pool, nestled within the garden, has been recently upgraded while retaining its original design.
José Diogo, who is still an integral member of our team as one of the leaders at the Concierge Desk, played an active role in the film when he was a mere 18 years old. You can even catch glimpses of him in multiple scenes, graciously presenting the room key to the James Bond agent.
The English writer Ian Fleming, renowned not only as the creator of the James Bond character but also as a journalist and a British Naval Intelligence Officer, introduced the world to Bond in his inaugural book, “Casino Royale” (1953). This character was inspired by the spies who, like Fleming, were guests at the Estoril Palácio Hotel during the World War II era. The James Bond film series debuted in 1962 with “Dr. No”.
Step into the Estoril Bar, a historical haven where spies once shared secrets over champagne. Sip on crafted cocktails amid scenic terraces, where Ian Fleming found inspiration for Agent 007 in “Casino Royale.”
